Rights when you start work

You must be paid the national minimum wage.

From the 1st October 2009 this is £3.57 an hour for young people aged 16 or 17 and £4.83 for people aged between 18 and 21 years old.

Your employer must give you a written contract of employment.

This tells you about:

  • holidays
  • hours you work
  • rules about being absent from work
  • other things you need to know
